When I left the USA to travel abroad for 2 years, I completely lost touch with mainstream news media. In a heartbeat, my normal routine of watching MSNBC with my family every night with dinner came to an abrupt halt.
Suddenly, I was forced to make a full switch over to independent sources of news, such as YouTube Channels, Twitter, online journalists, etc. to get ALL of my information.
At first, it felt strange to distance myself from the mainstream news. But now, almost 2 years after making this switch, I couldn’t be more thankful for this change I’ve made. Since switching away from mainstream media, I started feeling smarter, happier, and more optimistic for the future.
How could this be?
It’s simple when you understand how these news businesses work. Mainstream media behemoths like Fox, CNN, MSNBC have entire teams dedicated to psychological manipulation, with one simple goal: attracting as many eyeballs and clicks as possible, at any cost.
Guess what? Studies have shown that negative stimuli are more likely to spur people into taking action, so of course, these companies take full advantage of this. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, these conglomerates make millions by pumping a nonstop stream of doom, gloom, panic, and disaster into our lives.
This is not healthy.
Ok, so what are the alternatives?
The internet is FULL of great options for obtaining high-quality information, but today I’ll be sharing my 3 favorite alternatives to the mainstream news networks that profit on pessimism.
The virus revealed the fact that people can get a better education from YouTube than most colleges.

I know what you’re thinking… am I really painting YouTube as being a legitimate source for news?
Yes. Yes I am.
As long as you find the right channels and keep your bullshit radar on alert, you’ll find that there are thousands of independent producers out there that provide content that is FAR more knowledgeable, unbiased, and entertaining than the outdated CNNs, FOXs, and MSNBCs of the world.
Old news has a business model based on targeting emotions, which leads to a never-ending stream of doom, gloom, and panic headlines to make people click. This is a horrific system, but thankfully, the next era of media is stepping up to the plate thanks to YouTube’s ease of entry.
(Formerly) mainstream media has systemic negative & political bias about almost everything. Reading major newspapers makes you feel sad & angry. That’s why they’re being crushed by @joerogan. Likes/retweets of old media are extremely low. Ironic article:https://t.co/78uftW0P6t

Best of all? You can find channels focused on just about any niche topic you can think of. YouTube has developed substantially since its early days of cat videos and vine compilations, and is quickly becoming the singular hub for passionate creators to produce great content on the topics they’re knowledgeable about without needing to push constant negative energy to hunt for clicks.
In other words, YouTube makes it easier than ever before to gain knowledge from high-quality creators without spending a dime.
If you’ve never heard of Reddit, it’s time to get acquainted. It’s been a Top-20 website worldwide for years, and for good reason: In my eyes, it’s flat-out overtaken Facebook as the best feed-format platform for staying up-to-date on the topics you’re interested in.
What makes Reddit amazing is how easy it is to subscribe to ANYTHING you are curious about (and trust me folks- when I say anything, I mean anything). It’s no secret that you can fall into a black hole of time-wasting with meme pages on Reddit (totally not speaking from experience…) but with a proper dose of willpower, it’s an absolute goldmine of knowledge, backed by a simple upvote/downvote system that filters out the type of bad content that Facebook is bursting at the seams with.
My personal favorite pages? r/WorldNews, r/PersonalFinance, r/Futurology, r/Bitcoin, r/RenewableEnergy, r/ElectricVehicles, r/GreenInvestor. Reddit is an incredible source for quality information, as long as you use it properly.
Oh and did I mention… I even created a Reddit community for fellow sustainability nerds? Feel free to check it out HERE 😀
It gets a bad wrap sometimes, but here’s the thing:
Like Reddit, the value you can gain from Twitter is enormous, as long as you stay disciplined.
The ability to listen in on the thought processes of the world’s most brilliant minds is an incredible opportunity. As long as you can prevent yourself from getting sucked into hours of mud-slinging in the comments, Twitter is a goldmine of information, ideas, and inspiration from the smartest people on earth.
Thanks to my these awesome sources of independent information, I will remember 2019 not only as the year that I opened my mind through traveling, but as the year that I officially ditched the poisonous mainstream news machine.
I hope you’ll join me in this exciting new era of mainstream exodus, in the pursuit of more open-minded, accessible, and optimistic information!
