Rich Dad Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki

The Gist:

Rich Dad Poor Dad follow’s the author’s upbringing, in which he had 2 father figures:

  • 1 dad who was highly-educated, working in a high-level job
  • 1 dad who dropped out of school to focus purely on growing financial intelligence

The author contrasts how each “dad” differed when it came to different financial topics, and how he juggled these differing mindsets growing up.

This book doesn’t tell you WHAT to do; it simply outlines two completely different financial mindsets (AKA how the author’s rich dad, approached life, compared to his other, “poor” dad), and lets you connect the dots yourself.

Rich Dad Poor Dad is widely regarded as the holy grail of personal finance books. On the flipside, it has garnered its fair share of controversy over the years as well.

Regardless of what the critics say, none can doubt this book blew the doors off of the traditional educational system when it was written in 1997. It challenges just about every traditional norm when it comes to managing money, from saving, to employment, to the important distinction between liabilities and assets.

The beef that many people have with this book is that they simply don’t like the author, Robert Kiyosaki. Look, I don’t read books to worship authors- I read books to absorb knowledge from people that are smarter than me in a specific subject, regardless of if I like them or not.

In the personal finance niche, openness to new ideas is extremely important. I’m a firm believer in listening to what all sides have to say (especially when they’ve reached a high level of success) and forming your own opinions with whatever information YOU find valuable.

That said- this book is a juggernaut. Simply put, you’d be doing yourself a disservice to pass on it.

The Verdict:

Robert Kiyosaki’s breakdown of ASSETS vs. LIABILITIES alone makes Rich Dad Poor Dad book a must-read. This incredibly simple concept is critical wake-up call for anyone aiming for financial independence.

I recommend this book to absolutely ANYONE that dreams of escaping the rat race to live a fully-free life.
