I picked up The Art of Happiness for 5 bucks at a street market in Cairns, Australia as a bit of reading material on my east coast road trip. I knew it was a renowned best-seller, so I had to grab it from a pure value standpoint. But, to be honest, I expected it to be a bit of a snoozer.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Art of Happiness

The Art of Happiness is a value-packed book. It outlines the most effective ways to train your brain to understand, analyze, and proactively manage your emotions to achieve your happiest self.

As a collaborative project between the Dalai Lama and a reputable psychiatrist, you can quickly tell that these pages hold the result of some serious combined brainpower.

It doesn’t just drone on about making better friends or working a more fulfilling job (like we’ve all heard 5,000 times before); it breaks down complex emotional processes into simple terms, and lays out clear, actionable steps on how anyone can train their noggin to combat life’s struggles in a more constructive way.

The way the book is formatted is very digestable. It switches between 1-on-1 discussion with the Dalai Lama, and storytelling passages by the psychiatrist co-author in which he describes his own experience in implementing the DL’s lessons in his own life. It really helps the reader internalize the main points, and think about how they can apply them to their life, too.

Remember when your 2nd grade teacher told you to read books to enrich your life? This is what they were talking about.

Give it a read, folks! It will change the way you think, I guarantee it.

“Hard times build determination and inner strength. Through them we can also come to appreciate the uselessness of anger. Instead of getting angry nurture a deep caring and respect for troublemakers because by creating such trying circumstances they provide us with invaluable opportunities to practice tolerance and patience.”

-Dalai Lama XIV

“It is very rare or almost impossible that an event can be negative from all points of view.”

-Dalai Lama XIV
